SVP, ESG and Sustainability

At InfoComm 2025, AVIXA hosted a powerful panel discussion exploring how AV and IT technology integrators can meet the demands of the world’s most rigorous sustainable building standards. Moderated by AVI-SPL SVP of ESG and Sustainability, Kelly Bousman, the panel focused on the Living Building Challenge (LBC) and the practical steps needed to support these net-positive, energy-efficient projects.

The core requirements of the Living Building Challenge include:

  • Net-positive energy and water use
  • 75% daylight autonomy
  • 105% energy efficiency
  • Red List compliance

Designing and delivering projects that can rise to the Living Building Challenge involves a change in thinking from accounting for every possible use case to accounting for every possible measure of material, energy, and water consumption. The key to LBC success is to harmonize the human experience of the building with its lived environmental footprint.

To understand how to achieve this harmony, the panel included three subject-matter experts who have designed and supported Living Buildings in the U.S. Panelists included Britton Gates, Audiovisual Studio Director of Newcomb & Boyd, Ryan Sennett, Senior Associate for Technology of PAE Consulting Engineers, and Scott Simpson, Director, XTG Business Development for AVI-SPL.

Three core lessons emerged from our experts:

  • Minimizing impact requires maximizing efficiency.
  • Red List compliance takes ingenuity.
  • Energy efficiency can redefine what’s standard.

Minimizing impact requires maximizing efficiency.

Ryan Sennet of PAE described how their Portland, Oregon office drastically reduced network infrastructure by choosing a Wi-Fi-only scheme. After evaluating Passive Optical LAN and limited Ethernet drops, they determined that wireless access points were sufficient, even for an engineering firm with high data demands. This approach slashed cabling needs, cut construction costs, and allowed them to use fewer, Red List-compliant cables. It also enabled passive cooling in network rooms.

With low switch counts and careful thermal planning, like open MDF (Main Distribution Frame) network room walls with mesh screens for airflow, PAE maintained safe temperatures using ventilation alone. The combined efficiencies meant their total power usage in these network rooms was about half that of a hair dryer. Scott Simpson of AVI-SPL shared how PAE used advanced power distribution units to monitor real-time energy usage and connect AV power consumption to the building management system via Modbus protocol. This setup enabled automated power-down routines triggered by occupancy sensors or room schedules, bringing AV and IT into alignment with the Living Building Challenge’s operational goals. It also supported the AVIXA Energy Management Standard, helping quantify and optimize system performance across the facility.

Red List compliance takes ingenuity.

Avoiding harmful materials like PVC and formaldehyde, which are common in building and electronic components, requires discipline and innovation. For access control and surveillance, PAE used Power over Ethernet (PoE) locksets and cameras, minimizing cabling and eliminating the need for additional power supplies. Each lock could be powered by a single Red List-compliant Cat6 cable. The right-sized server design also helped: rather than a large 500-watt blade server, PAE used a 90-watt device tailored to their actual needs.

Georgia Tech’s Kendeda Building followed a similar path, leveraging Red List-free cabling and consolidating AV hardware into a central IDF (Intermediate Distribution Frame) network room. The Kendeda Building was also the first building on campus to deploy AV over IP which, because of its success, became the new campus-wide standard.

Energy efficiency can redefine what’s standard.

In Georgia’s hot, humid climate, the Kendeda Building had to keep both power consumption and indoor temperatures low. Newcomb & Boyd AV Studio Director Britton Gates explained how laser projection and AVoIP distribution allowed Georgia Tech to centralize AV gear and move heat-generating equipment out of occupied spaces. The result was less hardware, less cooling, and a seamless experience for instructors that matched the campus-wide standard. This was Georgia Tech’s first building to use AVoIP throughout it, and the project’s success prompted the university to adopt AVoIP as its new technology standard.

Scott Simpson of AVI-SPL noted a similar innovation at PAE. The Living building Challenge requires that 75% of the regularly occupied floor space be daylit. Direct View LEDs are bright enough for fully lit environments, but their power consumption is often too high to meet energy efficiency standards. To meet these daylighting and energy constraints, PAE chose Energy Star-rated LCD video walls over projection and Direct View LED.

Sustainability standards are just about systems; it’s also about user behavior. Simpson shared a favorite example from PAE: gamifying use of the stairs. Proximity sensors on each stair landing triggered colorful RGB lighting to travel up the wall, rewarding stair users with a playful visual effect and encouraging them to skip the elevator. By the end of each day, the goal was a fully lit wall, empowered by human movement and powered by less electricity than the elevator lifts.

Apply these lessons learned today.

From occupancy-based energy routines to daylight-optimized displays, AVIXA’s Beyond LEED panel highlighted how designers and engineers are not just supporting sustainable buildings, they’re redefining them.

The lessons shared here can not only go beyond LEED to Living Buildings, but they can also go beyond LEED to everyday buildings. Apply these expert tips in any building environment to preserve and protect our shared natural environment. AVI-SPL is committed to sustainability. Along with our own ESG and sustainable programs and targets, we work with partners with similar goals. These include like-minded partners like Barco. In this blog, we’ll explore Barco solutions that support sustainability goals in meeting rooms and control rooms.

First, let’s talk about what’s driving this renewed focus on more eco-friendly technology. Where is the significant shift toward sustainability in recent years coming from, and why does it matter to you

  • Increased consumer awareness: More and more consumers demand products and services that are more environmentally friendly and that bleeds into the workplace, too. PwC’s 2024 Voice of the Customer Survey noted that “Consumers are assessing producers’ sustainability practices through tangible attributes including production methods and recycling (40%), eco-friendly packaging (38%), and making a positive impact on nature and water conservation (34%).”
  • Focus on employee experience: A recent Deloitte State of the Consumer survey indicated that 69% of employed adults want companies to invest in sustainability efforts. Companies can attract and retain top talent by promoting their ESG and sustainability programs and progress.
  • Regulatory pressure: Governments across the world are implementing stricter environmental regulations. These new laws compel all businesses to adopt sustainable practices and track their progress. The United Nations reports that 62 countries and the EU introduced 485 policies targeting sustainable consumption and production shifts over the last four years.
  • Technological advancements: With research and development, along with caring for the environment and employee well-being, technology providers have developed more energy-efficient and sustainable technology. AVI-SPL identifies which technology vendors have environmentally friendly policies and processes in our AVI-SPL Supplier Sustainability Matrix. Barco is featured here and has one of the most ambitious climate targets of all programs we track.

AVI-SPL and Barco’s commitment to sustainable solutions

1. Designed for longevity and circularity

Barco designs new technology from the ground up and considers end-to-end environmental impact from design to manufacturing to packaging and shipping. The company created a comprehensive environmental impact measurement process through its ecoscoring model. Products with a lower environmental footprint are marked with the “Barco Eco Product Label.”
You can boost sustainability in meeting rooms by choosing Barco ClickShare conferencing and wireless presentation solutions.
The ClickShare Video Bar range and ClickShare CX-50 2nd gen all boast a CO2logic, a South Pole Company, CO2 Neutral Silver Product label.
The label certifies that a company calculates, reduces, and offsets its carbon footprint every year.

  • Barco’s ClickShare CX-50 gen II, ClickShare Bar Core, and ClickShare Bar Pro wireless conferencing systems are carbon-neutral
  • Every ClickShare product is designed with environmental responsibility in mind at every step of the product lifecycle.

While Barco products are designed with long lifespans, AVI-SPL can help ensure your devices perform at optimum levels during their lifetimes with proactive 24/7 support and managed services.

2. Energy Efficiency

Energy-efficient audiovisual (AV) devices play a crucial role in promoting sustainability by reducing energy consumption and minimizing environmental impact.

Creating standby modes that save power when devices are not actively in use is ideal for boosting energy efficiency.

Additionally, switching to components that inherently use less power optimizes energy consumption.

In meeting rooms

  • ClickShare products not only comply with the strictest Ecodesign legislation (The EU Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation) requirements for standby mode, but further reduce it to half the mandated limit (*Based on power consumption test report from Barco’s lab).
  • For instance, the ClickShare Bar range is 30% more energy efficient than competitive products in BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) mode.

In control rooms

  • Barco TruePix LED features an eco-power standby mode. It also has a long life span since it can be serviced for up to 10 years with LED batch-compatible tiles.
  • TruePix-I, takes sustainability even further. Its flip-chip technology makes individual LEDs more efficient. The result is higher brightness (over 1000 nit) at a lower power consumption. This further reduces the TCO and the ecological footprint.
  • Barco UniSee II video wall boasts a 20% reduction in power consumption compared to its predecessor, significantly decreasing its environmental impact and energy costs.
  • Compared to typical LCDs, Barco UniSee II consumes 20% less power (on average, depending on the content ). These reduced power needs are driven by using energy-efficient mini-LEDs as backlight, vs. traditional LCDs with always-on backlights.
  • Barco Rear Projection Cubes (RPCs) feature the powerful Laser projection system of the ODL series, which provides high contrast and excellent image quality, all with low power consumption.
  • You can upgrade some rear projection LED video walls to RPC laser technology with available upgrade kits.

Proactive monitoring and management

AVI-SPL Symphony software further supports your sustainability goals. Symphony users can extend product lifespans and reduce the total cost of ownership with automated device shutdown, remote monitoring of device health, and powering down when they are not in use. Symphony also supports a positive employee experience by resolving issues before they impact users.

In addition, the software provides room and technology usage analytics to make intelligent decisions on technology investments and reduce wasted spend.

3. Leverage recycled and non-hazardous materials

Using materials like post-consumer resin (PCR) plastics (derived from recycled materials that consumers have already used) in product manufacturing offers several significant sustainability benefits.

PCR plastics help divert waste from landfills, reducing the environmental impact of plastic pollution and reducing the need for new raw materials. And, recycling plastics requires less energy than manufacturing new plastics from raw materials, reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Using halogen-free printed circuit boards (PCB) also keeps hazardous waste, such as mercury, out of landfills.

“We pay close attention to the materials used in our products: choosing for non-paint plastics and opting for halogen-free PCB where possible. We also focus on using recycled materials, all our manuals are printed on recycled paper but also the products themselves use recycled materials. From Button to Tray: every product uses up to 30% recycled materials.” – Barco

4. More eco-friendly delivery

Packaging and shipping are integral parts of the product lifecycle that can significantly influence a product’s overall sustainability score. For example, plastic packaging often has a higher carbon footprint compared to biodegradable or recyclable materials. Here are some highlights from Barco.

  • Barco has reimagined packaging for products like ClickShare CX-50 2nd Gen with recycled (90%) and recyclable (94%) cardboard.
  • For ClickShare Video Bars, 86% of the cardboard packaging is made of recycled materials, and 98% of its packaging can be recycled.
  • Packaging is reused between Barco suppliers as much as possible, drastically reducing waste at this step.

Shipping weight and methods impact a product’s carbon footprint as well. Packing is designed to be as light as possible. Also, Barco’s primary transportation channel is by sea, followed by truck freight and air as a last resort.

5. End-of-life options that avoid landfills

Whether at the end of their service life or the end of their useful life, technology doesn’t simply disappear. Its material components live on, making proper, compliant disposal and recycling essential.

Barco offers a ClickShare trade-in program that simplifies upgrading to the latest energy-efficient devices. This trade-in program aligns with best practices, including the WEEE directive, by providing an environmentally responsible way to dispose of your existing hardware.

Additionally, AVI-SPL offers electronics recycling services during technology deployment as part of large room refresh projects.

With the higher education enrollment cliff looming, it’s crucial everyone, including IT, help attract and retain students. But where do you focus digital transformation efforts?

While hybrid learning is not going away anytime soon, students crave something more from their campus experience. They are seeking environments that challenge them and foster success and community. So, here is my take on how you can fulfill these needs and bring more students to your university.

Build immersive learning environments to prepare students for their careers

Real-world experiences like internships and time in the campus broadcast studio (shout out to Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois) prepared me for the job market. These opportunities let me safely explore writing, broadcasting, and video editing in real-world settings. Prospective students will look for similar hands-on experience to ensure their success.

Healthcare is an industry with highly sought after positions and roles where hands-on experience is essential.

Immersive simulation tech can give medical students that experience and possibly an extra push to call your institution home.

Medical simulation uses advanced audio visual and unified communications (AV/UC) solutions to surround students in everyday job-related tasks and challenges.

Show students they will have many opportunities to practice their passion safely by embracing state-of-the-art medical simulation tech like:

  • High-fidelity manikins to practice life-like patient interaction
  • Interactive digital displays for EKGs and simulation monitoring
  • Projectors for life-like person and technology interaction
  • AV-over-IP for seamless connection to building devices and content sharing

Aviation is another industry on the rise. Investing in cockpit simulation can get trainees flying faster. And AVI-SPL offers a modular cockpit simulation solution that can help.

Upgrade interactive learning spaces to exceed today’s student expectations

I am a 1990s millennial who did not have a mobile phone or tablet as a kid. Today’s students are savvy digital natives. So, the modern student will have higher technological expectations than previous generations.

Leverage best-in-class collaboration technologies to exceed these expectations and help your school stand out. For your classrooms, consider:

  • Interactive displays and smart boards to improve student-faculty engagement
  • Mobile lecture capture technology with AI cameras for engaging classroom recordings
  • Video bars, speakers and assistive listening tech to promote inclusive learning
  • Devices and furniture that enhance accessibility for people of all mobilities
  • AI-powered UC platforms easy engagement with remote attendees

Inspire student attendance with AV/UC solutions that meet evolving standards and advocate inclusivity.

Engage and wow with immersive communal spaces

My college experience revolved around enjoying time at the student center (Chick-fil-A Express was a game changer at Bradley) or chatting in a common area discussing an assignment. However, the spaces I congregated in were just rooms with furniture.

Adding digital displays, connected to centralized content management systems, in common areas can tell stories that catch the eye of campus visitors or remind students of their goals. Imagine:

Floor-to-ceiling dvLED video walls that showcase the university experience

Displays that highlight student achievement, promote events, and guide students across campus

Huddle room displays to help students share and interact with content

Use displays to remind students, parents, and faculty that what they do or will do at your institution matters.

Expand your student pool and grow community through esports

College is known for having sports and clubs connected to culture, interests, and career goals. My “club” was a fraternity.

A sport that is growing in interest, expanding culture and community, and supporting career goals is esports.

Esports, in some cases known as gaming, was something I enjoyed playing with my fraternity brothers. Now, there are universities with dedicated programs that compete on a national scale.

Developing or updating an eSports space can attract hobbyists, influencers, and top-tier athletes. Space designs could feature:

  • Video wall scoreboards and content broadcast
  • Broadcast studios to cover and stream eSports competition
  • Personal monitors, headsets, and systems for gaming stations

Attract students that may not have considered your school by investing in emerging programs like eSports.

Embrace ESG advocates with sustainable AV/UC tech

In the late 2000s, my primary focus was to get to college and work on my passion. Today, students and faculty are coming to campus more informed on environmental issues. A recent study shows forty-five percent of students took environmental sustainability into account when choosing a college, and twelve percent said it was a significant factor.

Many collaboration technology solutions are designed with sustainability in mind, appealing to environmentally conscious individuals.

You can reduce your carbon footprint, ensure your tech lasts longer, and draw more people to campus by selecting and promoting the use of these solutions.

For decades, Cisco’s heritage has been connecting us with the rest of the world via innovative network and software solutions. Hey, Webex! About five years ago, Cisco began reimagining the workplace experience, introducing a cloud-based platform – Cisco Spaces.

Cisco Spaces is a visual representation of a workplace, giving employees and IT a birds-eye view of the office. It shows available office and meeting space and the number of people on a floor or in those rooms.

The platform can help make the office more inviting and encourage people to return. Let’s explore four ways Cisco Spaces does just that.

Cisco Spaces leverages your existing tech to simplify how employees and IT work

It’s in Cisco Spaces’ “DNA” (deep cut for Cisco enthusiasts) to make employee and IT work experiences smoother for everyone.

Whether employees are on their way into the office or are already there, Cisco Spaces keeps them informed of daily workplace, meeting space, device, and platform status.

The cloud platform uses your Cisco wireless network—like Aironet®, Cisco Catalyst®, Meraki®, Cisco Webex® and collaboration devices, and third-party sensors, native apps, and more to gather information. After collecting the data, Cisco Spaces provides valuable insights into how people and devices move around the office. This information can also help IT understand how to optimize spaces.

1. Wayfinding with Cisco Spaces

The modern workplace is more of a “come in to collaborate” space. Some that work remotely more often may not be aware of the latest office floor plans, rooms, and technologies. So, it is crucial to ensure everyone understands your office’s layout, including:

  • How to get to each space
  • Collaboration spaces with appropriate AV/UC solutions
  • Available workstations

With Cisco Spaces, employees can easily plan for any situation before and during office hours. Cisco Spaces’ wayfinding feature offers a clickable 3D floor plan to help employees easily:

  • Check which rooms on a floor are free
  • Book a space
  • Review the room devices available (is it a Cisco smart room?)
  • Navigate to a space with real-time directions on their smartphone or office display

Because Cisco Spaces is accessible across devices, employees can schedule rooms anywhere at any time

2. Workplace safety to bring comfort and accelerate productivity

In addition to device and software security, we must also think of the employee side of safety and security. Post-pandemic, employees want to know their workspaces are safe and secure. Cisco Spaces can provide peace of mind by sharing:

  • Floor and room occupancy levels
  • Room temperature and humidity
  • Room air quality and CO2 levels

You can also use Cisco Spaces to get to know and organize users based on their office visits and movements. Organizations that employ the Cisco Spaces Engagements app can send SMS, email, push notifications, and more to keep people updated on office news or emergencies. You can tailor messages based on how people interact in the workplace and their location.

3. Creating a more sustainable workplace

Managing energy use and keeping up with sustainability goals are top of mind in today’s workplace. A simple way for IT to promote these initiatives is by reminding teams to turn off meeting room tech when not in use. But wouldn’t it be even better if you could make this process automatic?

Cisco smart room solutions can seamlessly connect to Cisco Spaces. This means your meeting rooms will automatically:

  • Power up when someone walks in the room
  • Detect the number of people in a space
  • Turn air conditioning and ventilation on and off
  • Record room data

With Cisco Spaces, your organization can save energy, extend the life of room devices, and tell IT which rooms and devices get the most use.

4. Understanding workplace behavior to refine everyday activities

In addition to streamlined workplace operations, providing a safe environment, and empowering sustainability, Cisco Spaces provides IT and leadership with actionable data.

Now, IT can track space use and create action plans for room upgrades based on that data. Cisco Spaces uses 2D and 3D office floor plans to display heat maps of the rooms employees and visitors use the most.

When you connect every piece of the Cisco wireless network and third-party tech, Cisco Spaces captures data across the entire office. Combined, you can create a facility that truly becomes a smart building.

Maximize how you use your workplace real estate

Cisco Spaces’ dynamic visuals, accessibility, and flexibility may be ideal for your organization. You can enhance workplace experiences, create an eco-smart workspace, and inspire a return to the office. AVI-SPL is here to help you get the most out of Cisco Spaces and make it all happen!

Our dedicated Cisco technology experts can help:
