SVP, ESG and Sustainability

At InfoComm 2025, AVIXA hosted a powerful panel discussion exploring how AV and IT technology integrators can meet the demands of the world’s most rigorous sustainable building standards. Moderated by AVI-SPL SVP of ESG and Sustainability, Kelly Bousman, the panel focused on the Living Building Challenge (LBC) and the practical steps needed to support these net-positive, energy-efficient projects.

The core requirements of the Living Building Challenge include:

  • Net-positive energy and water use
  • 75% daylight autonomy
  • 105% energy efficiency
  • Red List compliance

Designing and delivering projects that can rise to the Living Building Challenge involves a change in thinking from accounting for every possible use case to accounting for every possible measure of material, energy, and water consumption. The key to LBC success is to harmonize the human experience of the building with its lived environmental footprint.

To understand how to achieve this harmony, the panel included three subject-matter experts who have designed and supported Living Buildings in the U.S. Panelists included Britton Gates, Audiovisual Studio Director of Newcomb & Boyd, Ryan Sennett, Senior Associate for Technology of PAE Consulting Engineers, and Scott Simpson, Director, XTG Business Development for AVI-SPL.

Three core lessons emerged from our experts:

  • Minimizing impact requires maximizing efficiency.
  • Red List compliance takes ingenuity.
  • Energy efficiency can redefine what’s standard.

Minimizing impact requires maximizing efficiency.

Ryan Sennet of PAE described how their Portland, Oregon office drastically reduced network infrastructure by choosing a Wi-Fi-only scheme. After evaluating Passive Optical LAN and limited Ethernet drops, they determined that wireless access points were sufficient, even for an engineering firm with high data demands. This approach slashed cabling needs, cut construction costs, and allowed them to use fewer, Red List-compliant cables. It also enabled passive cooling in network rooms.

With low switch counts and careful thermal planning, like open MDF (Main Distribution Frame) network room walls with mesh screens for airflow, PAE maintained safe temperatures using ventilation alone. The combined efficiencies meant their total power usage in these network rooms was about half that of a hair dryer. Scott Simpson of AVI-SPL shared how PAE used advanced power distribution units to monitor real-time energy usage and connect AV power consumption to the building management system via Modbus protocol. This setup enabled automated power-down routines triggered by occupancy sensors or room schedules, bringing AV and IT into alignment with the Living Building Challenge’s operational goals. It also supported the AVIXA Energy Management Standard, helping quantify and optimize system performance across the facility.

Red List compliance takes ingenuity.

Avoiding harmful materials like PVC and formaldehyde, which are common in building and electronic components, requires discipline and innovation. For access control and surveillance, PAE used Power over Ethernet (PoE) locksets and cameras, minimizing cabling and eliminating the need for additional power supplies. Each lock could be powered by a single Red List-compliant Cat6 cable. The right-sized server design also helped: rather than a large 500-watt blade server, PAE used a 90-watt device tailored to their actual needs.

Georgia Tech’s Kendeda Building followed a similar path, leveraging Red List-free cabling and consolidating AV hardware into a central IDF (Intermediate Distribution Frame) network room. The Kendeda Building was also the first building on campus to deploy AV over IP which, because of its success, became the new campus-wide standard.

Energy efficiency can redefine what’s standard.

In Georgia’s hot, humid climate, the Kendeda Building had to keep both power consumption and indoor temperatures low. Newcomb & Boyd AV Studio Director Britton Gates explained how laser projection and AVoIP distribution allowed Georgia Tech to centralize AV gear and move heat-generating equipment out of occupied spaces. The result was less hardware, less cooling, and a seamless experience for instructors that matched the campus-wide standard. This was Georgia Tech’s first building to use AVoIP throughout it, and the project’s success prompted the university to adopt AVoIP as its new technology standard.

Scott Simpson of AVI-SPL noted a similar innovation at PAE. The Living building Challenge requires that 75% of the regularly occupied floor space be daylit. Direct View LEDs are bright enough for fully lit environments, but their power consumption is often too high to meet energy efficiency standards. To meet these daylighting and energy constraints, PAE chose Energy Star-rated LCD video walls over projection and Direct View LED.

Sustainability standards are just about systems; it’s also about user behavior. Simpson shared a favorite example from PAE: gamifying use of the stairs. Proximity sensors on each stair landing triggered colorful RGB lighting to travel up the wall, rewarding stair users with a playful visual effect and encouraging them to skip the elevator. By the end of each day, the goal was a fully lit wall, empowered by human movement and powered by less electricity than the elevator lifts.

Apply these lessons learned today.

From occupancy-based energy routines to daylight-optimized displays, AVIXA’s Beyond LEED panel highlighted how designers and engineers are not just supporting sustainable buildings, they’re redefining them.

The lessons shared here can not only go beyond LEED to Living Buildings, but they can also go beyond LEED to everyday buildings. Apply these expert tips in any building environment to preserve and protect our shared natural environment. Microsoft LogoWhen your meeting rooms and collaboration platforms empower people to do their best work, everyone wins.

Attracting and retaining top talent has become one of the most pressing challenges for today’s employers. While flexible work options are no longer a perk, but an expectation, many companies are also trying to bring employees back to the office, at least a few days a week, to foster collaboration, innovation, and a strong culture. In fact, CBRE’s 2024-2025 Global Workplace & Occupancy Insights survey reported that 92 percent of companies responding said they now require employees to spend some time on site.

The Balancing Act

It appears that employers want teams to return to the office, while employees are reluctant to relinquish the flexibility of working from anywhere. The result? The compromise of the new modern workplace. Hybrid models enable individuals to split their time between home and the office, often tailoring their schedules to accommodate family obligations, personal well-being, and productivity peaks. This added control over how and where they work leads to significant improvements in work-life balance.

Flexibility also empowers employees to work when and where they’re most focused and efficient. Many professionals find they are more productive at home during heads-down tasks and more energized by face-to-face collaboration in the office. Hybrid work enables a rhythm that balances deep focus with social interaction, leading to improved performance and a more sustainable work pace.

For employers, offering hybrid schedules isn’t just about employee perks. It’s a strategic move to attract and retain top talent. Workers who experience better balance are more engaged, loyal, and motivated. Conversely, you risk losing valued team members if you don’t offer remote work options. A recent Pew Research survey of people who can work remotely stated, “Nearly half of workers in this group (46%) say that if their employer no longer allowed them to work from home, they would be unlikely to stay at their current job.”

How IT leaders help solve talent challenges

This delicate balance of flexibility and in-person engagement puts pressure on IT leaders to create a smart workplace that employees actually want to return to. And the key to making that happen? Delivering seamless, frustration-free experiences through intelligent meeting room technology and unified communications platforms like Microsoft Teams.

Unified communications platforms tie everything together. When chat, calls, file sharing, and meetings happen in one integrated space like Microsoft Teams, employees stay connected and productive no matter where they work. Add AI-powered tools like Microsoft 365 Copilot, and tasks like meeting recaps, follow-ups, and data retrieval become faster and easier. This automation helps your teams spend less time managing technology and more time doing meaningful work.

For IT leaders, these tools not only improve the employee experience but also reduce support tickets, simplify device management, and increase adoption of Microsoft 365 tools. The result is a more agile, smart workplace that supports business goals and enhances job satisfaction. If your organization is looking to boost its talent strategy and make the office a destination, now’s the time to invest in technology that makes your employees’ lives easier.

How eight technology innovators are reshaping sustainability in the AV industry

Sustainability will take center stage at InfoComm 2025 with the return of the AVIXA Sustainability Tour on Wednesday, June 11, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.

Spotlighting audiovisual (AV) and unified communications (UC) manufacturers who are reshaping the industry’s approach to sustainability, the tour of eight vendor booths highlights environmental sustainability through innovation in product design, packaging, energy efficiency, and circularity. Each stop features solutions that reduce environmental impact while supporting end-user goals for responsible procurement, emissions reduction, and product lifecycle management.

From carbon footprint labeling to packaging design to zero-power digital signage, each stop tells a different story of how sustainability is emerging as a key component of AV technology product roadmaps, leading the way to a truly greener future.

See how sustainability is advancing across the entire technology life cycle

Tour participants will hear firsthand how these AV and UC technology leaders are rethinking their environmental impact from multiple angles:

  • Aluvision (Booth 961): Creating sustainable building blocks for exhibits and live events, Aluvision makes modular exhibit frames from at least 77.5% recycled aluminum. The frames are designed for endless possible combinations, reusability, and durability, significantly reducing environmental impact. The frames’ lightweight and compact designs lower transportation emissions, and their production facilities primarily operate on solar energy, underscoring their commitment to eco-friendly practices.
  • Barco (Booth 2829): Pioneering an eco-scoring system that integrates sustainability into every product development decision, evaluating energy use, materials, packaging, and lifecycle impact. Their new F400-4K projector embodies this approach, using a solid-state laser light source and durable aluminum housing to reduce maintenance and extend lifespan. The F400 meets the discerning demands of simulation environments while also achieving energy efficiency and a low carbon footprint.
  • Huddly (Booth 4415): Advancing sustainability by designing cameras that evolve through software rather than hardware replacement. Its collaboration devices, including the Huddly C1, receive regular firmware updates that introduce new AI-driven features, such as Gallery View and smart framing, without requiring new physical components. This approach reduces electronic waste and extends product lifespans.
  • Legrand (Booth 2801): Enabling sustainability through modular product design, environmental transparency, and long-term climate targets. Its Da-Lite projection screens feature modular components that can be replaced individually, extending product life and reducing waste. They also provide ISO-compliant Product Environmental Profiles (PEPs) to help customers evaluate the environmental impacts of their products across their entire life cycle. Legrand has committed to reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
  • Logitech (Booth 3012): Leading the industry in product-level carbon transparency, with carbon footprint labels now featured on 66% of its products and a goal of reaching 100% by the end of the year. Logitech integrates circular design by utilizing next-life plastics in video collaboration devices, such as Logitech Sight, and low-carbon aluminum produced with renewable energy, thereby eliminating thousands of metric tons of CO₂e. Its environmental sensors, like Logitech Spot, help optimize room use and monitor air quality, temperature, and humidity, supporting healthier, more energy-efficient workplaces. Logitech’s efforts align with global standards, like LEED and WELL Buildings, for both climate responsibility and workplace well-being.
  • Philips Professional Displays (Booth 3351): Dramatically reducing the carbon footprint of digital signage through its EcoDesign QE-Line and Tableaux ePaper series. The QE-Line reduces energy use by 50% compared to similar 4K UHD models, uses recyclable materials and packaging, and was the first digital signage display to achieve EPEAT Climate+ Gold certification. Tableaux full-color ePaper displays require power only to update content, offering a zero-power signage solution while also reducing paper waste by digitizing traditional posters and placards.
  • Sharp (Booth 1601): Redefining sustainability and signage, Sharp’s Advanced Color ePaper (ACeP) displays consume no power when static and only minimal energy to update content, enabling carbon-neutral signage. With a paper-like appearance and excellent readability in bright environments, they eliminate blue light emissions and constant power needs. Lightweight, battery-operable, and made with recycled materials, ACeP displays are ideal for sustainable signage in retail, transit, and hospitality settings.
  • Shure (Booth 2843): Radically reducing the environmental impact of its packaging by replacing plastic trays with molded pulp, minimizing printed materials, and optimizing box sizes to lower carbon emissions from shipping. Shure achieved its goal of using 75% recyclable or renewable packaging materials by 2023 and aims to reach 100% by 2030, or sooner.

Connecting Sustainability to Business Impact

This year’s AVIXA Sustainability Tour shows that environmental progress and product performance can go hand in hand. From circular design and carbon labeling to e-waste reduction and energy savings, each of these manufacturers is advancing sustainability in ways that matter, not just to the planet, but to customers’ bottom lines and procurement priorities.

“Sustainability is no longer a nice-to-have,” said Kelly Bousman, Senior Vice President of ESG and Sustainability at AVI-SPL and tour leader. “It’s becoming a deciding factor in AV purchasing. This tour is about showing what’s possible when we bring the same rigor to sustainability as we do to system design.”

More AV customers than ever before are setting carbon reduction targets, and manufacturers and integrators play a critical role in shaping low-carbon solutions through product design, deployment, and operation. There is a clear, growing demand for verified product data, modularity, longevity, and efficient operation, and AVIXA members are responding with real innovation.

A Step Toward More Sustainable Standards

AVI-SPL’s involvement in the tour reflects its broader commitment to sustainability. From reducing its own carbon footprint and offering eco-friendly meeting room designs, to creating tools like the Supplier Sustainability Matrix and leading rainforest conservation through the UN-REDD+ program, the company is working across the AV value chain to create meaningful change.

The AVIXA Sustainability Tour at InfoComm 2025 is just one example of how cross-industry collaboration can accelerate progress. By spotlighting verified environmental practices in real-world applications, AVI-SPL and its partners are helping raise the bar and helping the industry move toward greener standards that benefit everyone.

Designing meeting spaces or upgrading office displays can be challenging when ambient light is in play. Glare and reflection make screens harder to see. Lower visibility forces the user to increase screen brightness and limits room design flexibility. Fortunately, adaptive brightness and anti-glare display technology can help.

Adaptive brightness display technology to promote energy efficiency

Placing digital displays in high-ambient light areas can lead to increased power consumption as screens work harder to remain visible. If sustainability is a priority for your company, higher power usage isn’t ideal.

Investing in signage with adaptive brightness modes can help. In spaces with natural light, brightness levels fluctuate throughout the day. Displays with built-in eco brightness control automatically adjust to light shifts. Eco-friendly controls ensure ideal visibility while conserving energy.

Design the space the way you want with Sony anti-glare displays

Some might suggest simply adjusting room design to accommodate lighting. That can help. But it doesn’t guarantee the best end-user experience.

An inclusive workplace puts the user first. To achieve this, you need a solution that not only supports accessibility but also aligns with your broader vision. So, invest in AV tech that overcomes lighting issues and brings your vision to life

Sony’s BRAVIA Pro line has several displays with a Deep Non-Glare Coating to overcome screen glare and reflection. The feature eliminates reflections, allowing content to come through clearly.

And good news! Sony BRAVIA Pro displays resolve room lighting challenges and adhere to ESG goals with its built in ECO dashboard.

Think creatively and plan confidently with AVI-SPL and Sony BZ-L displays

AVI-SPL AV/UC experts can help you select and install BRAVIA Pro displays that fit your needs. We’ll ensure that it aligns with your design and sustainability goals.

When technology adapts to your environment, rather than the other way around, you open new possibilities. Let’s create smarter, more efficient, inclusive workplaces together.

Schedule a consultation today. We’ll simplify your workplace technology strategy and find the right AV/UC solutions to support your goals.

One of the biggest productivity killers in any workplace? Meeting room and shared desk confusion. Double-bookings, no-shows, or unclear availability can create unnecessary friction in an otherwise smooth workflow. Evoko scheduling solutions are purpose-built to eliminate these issues.

With sleek touch panels and cloud-connected software, Evoko simplifies room and desk booking by giving users a clear, at-a-glance view of availability, usage data, and upcoming reservations. Users can book spaces directly from the panel, through their calendar, or via mobile apps—whichever method fits their style best. This kind of intelligent scheduling not only improves room utilization but also empowers teams to collaborate more efficiently.

Biamp Workplace: centralized control, elevated productivity

The Biamp Workplace platform takes AV personalization a step further by integrating all aspects of AV control into a centralized, scalable ecosystem. From conference rooms to open workspaces, Biamp Workplace gives organizations a powerful way to manage audio, video, room and desk scheduling, and environmental controls from a single, cloud-based interface.

More than just a control platform, Biamp Workplace enables data-driven decision making. Facility managers can monitor usage trends, diagnose issues remotely, and automate system responses—all of which contribute to reduced downtime and increased productivity. This level of insight makes it easier to create environments tailored to employee preferences and evolving business needs.

And, AVI-SPL and  Biamp are working together to integrate Biamp Workplace with AVI-SPL Symphony. Symphony manages and analyzes technology-enabled spaces in one efficient platform. You can easily see and understand what is happening across your collaboration ecosystem and quickly prevent and act on issues.

Biamp Launch: one-button audio optimization

Even the best conferencing tools fall flat if the audio doesn’t deliver. That’s where Biamp Launch excels. It’s an automatic device tuning technology that configures and optimizes professional-grade audio systems with just the push of a button.

Whether a room is large or small, acoustically challenging or architecturally unique, Biamp Launch measures the room’s acoustic profile and adjusts settings for optimal clarity—instantly. This takes the guesswork out of setup and ensures a consistent, high-quality experience for both in-room and remote participants.

The path forward

Personalized, future-ready AV isn’t just about adopting new tech—it’s about empowering people to work better. Solutions like Evoko, Biamp Workplace, and Biamp Launch demonstrate how thoughtful innovation can transform the modern workplace into a space that’s more intuitive, connected, and ready for whatever comes next.
